400 lumen lioncub!
« on: October 25, 2005, 09:43:08 AM »
Ok.. i dunno who got me on the hotwire kick probably have to blame NikolaTesla... but i have to 'blame' wallyrulz for this one...

He came up with the idea of making a long tube for the lioncub.. and stuffing a 1274 bulb in there and regulating it.

Well.. i dunno how difficult it would be to make a 2x18650 tube for the lioncub but the rest seemed feasible...

The 1274 would pull about 2.73A at 7V (regulated) and output about 500 lumen.. that's pretty kick butt, however it isn't happening any time soon and the mag reflector would melt with 19W inside it.

So.. exploring other bulb options i found the 1316... which when run at 7V, outputs 404 lumen... but at only 12.7W... well.. 6.35W is a lot to pull from an R123 but though they might complain about it they do it all the time in the lion cubs any time they are pushing on the order of 1.7A with a fresh cell.. and i've measured higher.

The 1274 efficacy is 26.2 lum/watt at 7V.. the 1316 is 31.7!

In any event.. in the interest of advancing science of flashlights.. i'm planning on re-working my natural lioncub to run a WA1316 at 7V from a pair of R123s (hopefully i could source some 18340s vs 17340s 'cuase they'd be good for 1000mAH vs 700-750).. and i'd be down below 2C.

And they call the USL the ultimate stealth light ;) imagine the surprise from seeing 400 lumen come out of a lion cub!

Maybe i should do it to the brass one instead?

In any event, this is a very exciting idea.. as wallyrulz said.. the mag host is just 'too big' once you hold a lion cub with a lionhead on it.

I think i'll do some runtime tests on the bench to see just how much abuse those R123s can take and what voltage they can hold when consistently pounded with 1.8A. (don't try this one at home)... maybe i'll drill a vent hole in the battery tube just for safety sake.

Can you say HOT!!!

That sucker would heat up in a hurry!!!

But it WOULD be bright while you could still hold it.

with like 20 minute battery... you'd naturally gravitate to on when you really need it.. actually i don't think it would get all that hot.. most of the heat would leave in the form of IR.. it's not a 20W bulb, more like 12W..

Anyhow now i'm kinda glad nobody bought my Green LionCub 'cause i have a purpose and a cause for it now.
