4X123...suggestions please
« on: January 25, 2006, 02:15:30 AM »
The only mod I have reversed is my Mag 2d to 4X123. Just did not give me any more bang than 2c 3X123. But one problem is I don't order expensive bulbs. Maybe 12V is just not a good combination. Don't remember all the bulbs I tried. I know I used the KPR118 and some old Coleman 12V bulb I had from past.

I would like to try again. Any bulbs easy to get that would make this a lot brighter than 3x123? If not, then I don't see the sense in just having a flashlight that uses up 4 instead of 3 123's without much of a gain. I know that there are mods (8AA and such) for 2D that are really hot, so maybe that's would I should do?

the 123 cell really is a let-down in regards to power and efficiencies.. in a 2D unbored light the 1111 bulb with 6xCBP AAs in a holder is pretty much untouchable. under any real load the CR123 will sag to about 2.3V meaning your 4x123 is really more like 9.2.. a much better solution is 2x18650 in a 2C.. that will run an 1111 extremely well and has a much smaller form factor than 2D

andrewwynn, thanks for the answer. I think I will go with the 2c. I like the 2c for host best anyway. I think I will just upgrade the 2D to 3C and 3W LED. This will make a good emergency light.

Question: I am new to buying bulbs other than off local shelf. Were do I find 1111 bulb?

i buy from either litho123 or fivemega.. unless you modded your switch you need either a bi-pin adapter (fivemega) or a KIU socket.. or potted lamps.

I just modded a 2D M@g with 4 x cr123's using a 6-cell M@gLite WhiteStar Krypton bulb and a spring from an old Garrity 2D. This is my first M@g mod. I like it! I know I am just starting, so take this as you may. I can see how addicting this stuff can be!

Regards.

Another non mod option is the G&P X12.  A great light that runs off primaries.  Lighthound and other sellers have them ----> http://www.lighthound.com/sales/gp_x12_flashlight.htm

Aside from WA1185 bulbs, I also have some Reflectalite GH24 bulbs.  They are supposed to put out around 300 lumens when overdriven - simple PR based - no need to change the reflector - I use one in a 3X123 (or 2X150A/S) in a Mag2C and one in a 6XAA(NiMH) Mag2D.  The GH24 (~$6 + shipping) also makes an affordable gift - 2C ($15)+ GH24 ($6+Shipping)+ rubber tube (free or almost free)+3XCR123s ($3-5)= A kick but light for under $30!
Dragon, Ti, and Classic Chammies, Blk, Bare, & Brass LCs, Blk & Bare LHs, X990, Rayzorlite, The Torch, Mag85, MagGH24, SF C3, C2, 6P, G2, & Winelights, Peak Caribbean, Pacific, McKinnleys, + more , Exolion Ti, Orb Raw NS, SS Gatlight, Eternalights, Nuwai QIII, Inova X5THAs, X1, ARCs, + more?

Especially if you toss in an LOP reflector to clean up the beam.  Mine is one of my favorite lights.  There's something about the Mag 2C that just feels rights.

Where can you get cammed Al reflectors these days?

For 4 series CR123: Carley CA 717 9.1 V and .780 A.  Thatís about 10W so OEM stuff will be fine.

ginseng and juancho reported this one a being successful.

For 4 series 2 parallel CR123: Welch Alynn WA01131 9.6V 1.93A for around 800 bulb lumens.

I can't remember who did this one.  Probably soloco.  A little dangerous I think.  Gotta make sure your parallel connection has low resistance and cannot short in anyway.

Anymore the only CR123 based Hotwire I'll mess with is 3 series.  My favorite is the CA1499 litho123 desinged.  He is selling both clear and frosted versions and can be found in the above link.
