V3 questions
« Reply #25 on: August 14, 2007, 02:51:58 PM »
1. Is the V3 have thermal regulation?

2. Is there a low cut-off voltage?

3. Thoughts on using LiFePO4 batteries?  I'm aware of the rather run-time issue.

I'm quite please with mine.  It is somewhat larger than the HDS I used to carry in my pocket, but it has the best UI I've seen yet (hint to others: adding button clicks is not the same as improving the UI).

To your questions
1) We first wanted to do it, however we decided not to in order to be able to upgrade the LED to future LED generations. Right now we have a Seoul P4 Led in there, lets say if Luxeon comes out with a new K2 related version which have significantly higher die temperatures we'd have some issues there. Instead we limited the current with primaries to a level where the light is thermally save in all cases. If you use it with rechargeables you should be fine as well, unless you don't hold it, and leave it out in the open and running for a while in hot weather... so don't do that.

2) Yes there is a very low cut-off voltage, it is between 1.5 and 1.7V - a reason why use with rechargeables is not recommended since if you run'em down that low it will dramatically shorten their life. Ideal usage is really with primary cells.

3) Interesting question... well here is the skinny. The main thing is voltage drop of the battery. If you put a battery in there with low voltage drop it will supply 1000+mAh to the LED. If the battery voltage drops to f.e. 2V under full load like is the case when using primary lithiums, at that low voltage, the buck boost chip has to pull a lot more current to get the Watts the LED wants - or brightness you selected with the knob. Now the buck boost chip has a CURRENT limit it can handle... so at low battery voltages - and full brightness... the boost chip will limit the current that is pulled out of the battery to its max. design specs. So I don't know what the voltage drop is of those batteries. If it doesnt go down much you'll get 1000mAh to the LED - similar to use with 3.6V rechargeables. We however spec the light for use with primaries only - simply because its hard to explain to the general public what a protected battery is, also some vendors sell protected batteries that are not really protected. Also the fact that it runs at 1000mA at max, is more than what we want the general public to run them at. OF course someone familiar with flashlights and batteries... they like having the max be up there... IF you just turn the light down from max a notch(when using rechargeables)... where you can tell a bit of a difference (less bright) to max, is already fine. Also your runtime at 1000mA is very short, just turning it down a notch gives you about an hour - with not much perceivable brightness decrease.

Oh and if you like the UI and want it smaller.... check out our upcoming EOS - for which I just started a teaser thread... give us a couple more days and we'll show more.... and even though the picture in there IS OF the first EOS prototype it's not as weird as one might think based on the first sightings and photo in that thread... however all I can say THE EOS IS ONE AWESOME LIGHT - as usual with us expect nothing less but something really unique & never done before....

What is the approximate power draw at the lowest setting?  I'm wondering how long it will run in "night-light" mode
