The DRAGON - SOLD OUT!
« on: January 29, 2007, 01:09:00 AM »

UPDATE 8-14-07:

Here are your still-dismantled Dragons, cracking their way out of an enormous, square, well-padded and very Bizarro-like cardboard egg:

The finish- and color-matching between the stainless steel DragonClaw strike bezel and Titanium secret-identity, pedestrian bezel came out pretty close, don't ya think?

The Dragon-only logos were supersized to maintain esthetic balance:

Now to try and coordinate a HAT...ya see, ever since havin' their pitchers posted on the net 'cause of their help in building the VIP, LionHeart, LionCub, Chameleon and DamCham, they may as well have been on the cover of The Rolling Stone, bought five copies for their mothers, etc. because now, since their time is so precious and celebrity so notorious and all, it's like herding cats to get'em ta all show up at the same time in the same place (my house)...hmmm, actually I could just build all forty of'em myself...

UPDATE 5-5-07:

My apologies for the delays, but planning and negotiating and sourcing take much time - but the good news is that I finally have a price:

$586

plus shipping.  As usual your shipping cost will be my actual cost, meaning $4.50 for Priority Mail w/Delivery Confirmation anywhere in the U.S., although I found out that the U.S. Postal Service will no longer offer Global Priority Mail beginning some time this month, so I will let you know what the international shipping cost (and method) will be as soon as I find out although I doubt it will be much more than before, meaning perhaps up to twice the U.S. Priority Mail rate on average.

The original plan was to have the anticipated CNC provider front the Titanium body parts and I would pay them after I collected payments when the Dragon lights were built and ready to fly.  However, some interceding circumstances arose and I will use another CNC shop and thus will require a non-refundable $200 deposit to firm up everyone's place on The List.  The one change will be that the original knurling design will be replaced with grooves ringing the heads and battery tubes, both because the initial knurl pattern that was shown belongs to the first CNC shop who is no longer the machine services provider, and also because there will now be a Tritium vial (using Luminox's patented PLT® or Permanent Light Technology) inset into the top groove directly below the power button, to facilitate switch location in zero-light conditions.

The estimated arrival of the Titanium tail tubes and heads, and now also two bezels (the regular bezel in Ti and the tactical strike bezel in stainless steel) are approximately five to seven weeks away.  The Dragons will be HAT-built immediately after this and shipping will begin approximately one week afterward.

If the listees would kindly confirm their intentions by transacting a $200 deposit via Paypal to

mrbulk(at)gmail(dot)com

I will update the List below as funds are received.  And as always, thank you kindly for your patience, understanding and support.  I know this has been awhile in coming but if past precedence is any indication, it will be well worth it.

UPDATE 4-2-07:

See latest post...

***********************************************************

UPDATE 2-12-07:

Yes RPM, and here come the very first of your CAD renderings - now folks, keep in mind that the designs have not been finalized, mainly because these are actually three subtle variations of what a dragon's skin (scales) might be like, while also presenting a "knurled" type of exterior surface ensuring securely grippy hand purchase.  Intended to work visually in concert with the Claw bezel and tail design, the final Dragon theme should stand out quite uniquely (the pics should show up at the very bottom of this post).

***********************************************************

UPDATE 2-8-07:

The CMs have all passed QC, meaning we will have thirty one Drags available after the heads and tails are completed, along with the hand sorting through all the SSC P4 LEDs I will inevitably amass as usual.

Whoops, of course I still have to build'em too...:icon_scratch:

*************************************************************

UPATE 1-31-07:  I have in my hot little hands the SSC P4's.  Will be going to town checking them out via run and fit and brightness tests, etc., soon as I hit my days (er, make that DAY) off, which is this Saturday.  Due to retirements and vacations at my job we only have three people staffing my Position Description when we Should have at least five, with six being our actual full allocation strength!

**************************************************************

UPDATE 1-29-07:  I am pushing for the DragonClaw, which is the interchangeable bezel of the Dragon, to be machined from S30V stainless, the material of choice it seems among the majority of knife makers today because of its hardness, ability to take and hold a razor sharp edge and its resistance to oxidation.  However the claws will be cut to the properly shaped angles only -- it is up to the owners to sharpen'em up (or grind'em flat)...

**************************************************************

UPDATE :  It appears there could indeed be more Dragons available.  Initially when these Titanium CMs were run, the first batch came off being .020" (twenty thousandths - or 2/100 - of an inch) short.  Not a biggie so far as actual height of the CM is concerned, but placement of the switch hole becomes more important.

Thankfully this was discovered before subsequent cutting operations were made, and TnC was able to adjust the switch hole position on the first batch to accommodate this while maintaining the proper heatsink-platform-to-emitter-height-to reflector spacing.  I will have them to test fit and once I confirm the results are successful, there will be no practical difference between these and the "normal length" CMs, aside from measurement with a micrometer or placing two of them next to each other on a perfectly flat surface.  Thus we may be able to have up to double the number of Dragons - twelve sets of twins, approximately - and the signup list remains active.

*********************************************************

Well, for now I can only introduce the Titanium Tower (see pic below) of the already-completed Ti CMs because I am figuring out a couple of things as far as front and rear treatments of the light, but rest assured it will be All Titanium - except the glass and li-ion batteries, of course, and naturally the new LED - did I say new LED?  Why yes, Yes indeedy, I shore did.

The Dragon will be fully regulated with the same interface as the Chameleon (arguably the easiest-to-use system with the most features), but it will have a much brighter LED (I had hoped it was smarter to wait out the Cree craze and it turns out I was right, at least up to this point in time), the same one that SureFire uses in at least one or two of its newest (and nearly impossible to get, it seems) flashlights, and will have unique front- and tail-end treatments, most likely functional (ie. DragonClaw©, DragonBarb© etc.), although also swappable for plain Jane mundane replacements when necessary to board airplanes successfully, etc.

For now it looks like there will only be twelve available, which naturally means eleven, since yours truly absolutely must keep one if this light turns out as bright while also just as functional as we anticipate.  I was going to take a look on the other related thread/s to see if there were people indicating interest, but so much has changed in both technology and personal fiscal circumstances since then, that it may be fairer to just sound off here whether you would be in or out.  Unfortunately no firm prices can be posted yet, not until I get the final cost breakdowns, but it should be in the neighborhood of what the other Ti lights have been reselling for - although what would make the Dragon more attractive is that none of those others had the (up to 240 lu) Seoul P4 in their front ends.

*EDIT 1-28-07:  A sign-up list of preference order has been started.  Being that the CMs have already been made, there will probably not be any serial numbers, at least not on parts with any real significance, since the heads and tails could easily be unscrewed and switched:

The interface looks a little confusing on the prototype, with 12 buttons to press...
But, I'm sure that will be worked out in the beta testing.

I think we're on the right track here.

and... I'm in, of course.

Cheers,

Uh, yowsa, yessireebob, that'd be a Big 10-4, good buddy.  Please add Mr. AWTYD to the six slot and Mr. Mack to the #007 location, s'il vous plait.  Nice work, Charlie, but, at the risk of bein' CUT-OFF, I gotta agree with Reg: maybe we oughta be callin' it the Ti Flute.  :evil6:   J/K, the CM's look good!  Eric being a principal designer of this project, I'm sure he's already guaranteed a spot anyway.  ;)

Well since there's only 12 at this time... I want #13  ;)

Well, that's if there is a number "zero"  Then that would make 13 lights... Or maybe mine could be #13 of 12

Well... just forget it... My LH and Cubs and Dam Cham are #14, so it won't match.  Darn!  I can't have light if it doesn't match  :'(

Well, on the other hand, I can't not have a Dragooon if you other guys are gettin' one....so count me in

I always wondered if Dragons had "seouls"  :dontknow:

I guess in time, we'll all find out.                     Maybe a fire breathing Dragon (with seoul) :violent5:

Oh gawd, we're not starting the Dam Serial number madness again, are we?

My vote: No serial numbers, no logo... sterile.

Like the Ti LionCub :)

Looks like I already missed #8....  :'(  So, any number will be fine...

I'm in for one, depending on final pricing... How similar will this be to the Ti Cham/Ti Cub?

Charlie, I haven't seen SSC P4 with any lower Vf than I... i.e. 3.25V to 3.5V at 350mah... I don't think the Chameleon board will be too happy with this... right?

Hi guys,

It's good too see the instant response!  Thanks for your support.

PSM is right, them two is in as usual, as Troy already confirmed with his post.

Hey Troy, actually Eric is the principal pusher of this project, calling and e-mailing and pm'ing me continually until I finally gave in!  So RPM is the designer of the heads and tails with some a my input as to what I wanted insofar as the actual look as well as the - functionality is concerned. :naughty:

Hey Ragzz, it's good to see you here buddy!

Hay RPM - a "Fire Breathing Dragon with Seoul"?  Haw! :ROTFLMAO:

Oh, and BTW, I am so with Regentag on the sterile/no number thang...

kiely23, gotcha covered man.

You too greg -  and it would seem that the original admonishment with the first Chameleons - that Table 5 was experimental and to be used at your own risk - goes like Double on the Dragon.  Especially since the SP4's will seriously outbright anything else even when underdriven - then why overdrive?  Thus at lower levels the Vf should not matter as much.

dimebag, you are hereby listed!

I am hoping to have the FA (First Article) proto body in my hands this week, and hopefully the shipment of Seoul P4's will arrive at around the same time, so we should have a bright runnin' preproduction light together and a-hummin' in short order.  Please stay tuned...
