I tried machining Grade 5 but after destroying some drills within a few minutes I sold this rod again ;)

Is the grade 5 getting to the hard end of the scale where it starts to become brittle. I am not aware of the different characteristics.
Happy to be here.

In my experience, Grade 5 machines beautifully. It is not brittle but just a harder grade metal to begin with.

It will burn drills as Jochen says unless you slow right down and use lots of coolant.

Where grade 5 really shines is when you are dealing with wall thickness of 0.010"
( Very thin).
