Talk Story / Re: The Big Island, Hawaii Vacation Pictures
« on: February 14, 2009, 07:29:22 AM »
861 miles in 5 nights?  Looks like you really fit a lot of locations into a short time.  Good stuff, I haven't been to the Big Island since 87, but have been wanting to go back and take some pictures--even moreso now that I see all the places you went to.

Talk Story / Re: Windows XP Service Pack 3 out
« on: May 11, 2008, 09:28:27 PM »
For what I do I actually don't really mind Vista the OS.  I still have an aversion to Office 2007 but I've gotten used to it as a daily user.  My main work computer is Vista Business and my home computer is XP pro and for a single user I find Vista useful in some aspects (I like how it handles windows updates).  The update system on Vista seems to work way better and it includes office updates with the windows updates so it makes it easier (that actually may be a function of Office 2007--haven't used 2003 on a Vista machine yet).  It definitely isn't user friendly with the networking, though, I still haven't managed to put a standard share folder on a Vista machine.

Installing SP3 as I type--probably should've backed up first but spur of the moment click of the mouse.

As for Mac, I'm still not completely sold.  I have a MacBook Pro at work and have set up several iMacs, but haven't used any as a daily user yet.  I do like Leopard a little more than Tiger in the short time that I've used it.  My biggest problem with Mac is the lack of variety.  The selections for the laptops are decent--Mac Air, MacBook and MacBook Pro, but the selection for desktops suck.  You either get the Mac Mini which I am just not into--$799 seems to be pretty overpriced for a 2.0 core2duo, 120GB RAM and 1GB of memory and not much in the way of upgrade-ability.  The iMac, which if the screen breaks you're screwed, or if you want to upgrade later you'll be spending more because you have to buy the screen along with it and no real upgrade-ability either, pricey and man do I hate that keyboard.  Then of course you jump all the way to the Mac Pro which I would love to have but starting at $2799 without a monitor with only 2GB RAM, 320GB hard drive and 256MB of graphics memory?  One of the guys at work has one and claimed that it was bogging down in Illustrator with 4GB of RAM and if that's true (which I actually don't think it is), then it's not worth the money.  Then again sometimes my MacBook Pro with 2GB of RAM isn't exactly fast just in general tasks (Internet, Office, DPP etc.) so it's believable.  I have nothing against Macs at this point because I kinda like them and some of the OS stuff is easier than Windows (software installations in general seem way simpler) but they seem overpriced and there's just not enough to choose from.  If they had a cheaper Mac Pro (do most people really need 8 cores?) then I'd be looking at it, but I can't justify it at this time.  I just spent $1000 completely overhauling my PC--new CPU (Q6600 quad core), mobo, hard drives (2x 640GB), DVDRW drives, GPU (512MB), RAM (4GB) and I'm really happy with it so far (my old computer just couldn't handle running Photoshop and Lightroom) so it was not practical for me to spend more on a Mac.

Anyway, thanks for the heads up on the SP3--didn't know it was there.  It finished downloading but haven't installed it yet--maybe I should back up first...we'll see, I guess...

[edit]Installation didn't take too long and I haven't had any problems so far so it looks like all is good for the time being.

That's good to hear, the designer of the Subcoms is Chad Los Banos is a local boy from the Big Island.  I haven't gotten any of the Subcoms, but I bought a Spyderco Lava that he designed a while back and it's a well designed knife.  He's a good guy too, I did a trade with him a few years ago before his designs got picked up.

Man, I had no idea--that's a real loss.  I've never dealt with the guy but loved a lot of his designs.

Flashlight Components / Re: Best AA/AAA charger?
« on: October 29, 2007, 12:53:05 AM »

Also try the vanson 2299. Even comes with a travel charger adaptor.

Zenghost; As most would atest to.

Eneloops are a NI-MH rechargable that was developed to address the problem of rechargable batteries (including nimhs) of loosing thier charge while in storage for a long peroid time.

Eneloopss simply hold their charge longer that other nimh batteries.

Thanks, borealis--I bought an 8 pack of Eneloops today so we'll see.  So basically any rechargeable NiMHs can be charge in any NiMH charger?  I'll be using my current Sony charger to charge the Eneloops until I can look into the La Crosse or Maha chargers.

This brings up something that I've been wondering recently.  I currently have this Sony charger that I bought that came with 4AA batts I use in my flash.  I recently bought another flash and want to buy some more batteries--can I buy say something like these batteries?  I need the batts pretty much today so I can't go ordering anything and the Circuit City here has the Eneloops but are all out of the Sony brands that I wanted to buy.  I just know jack about rechargeables and have only ever used batteries with the chargers they come with.  I also like this particular charger because it has a "Refresh" button on it.  I may eventually order another one from Amazon but need it now.  Any help would be appreciated--just don't want to blow anything up by putting the wrong batts in.

ps...where would the best place be to find the Maha and La Crosse?

Hawaii lucked out at the end and came out on top.  Colt with 548 yards, 4 TD, 1 INT.  So after 6 quarters plus 1 OT possession (didn't play 2nd half of first game), he is 77/101 with 964 yards, 10 TDs, 1 INT.  More importantly, of course, Hawaii is now 2-0 going into UNLV next week but they're going to have to learn how to stop the run if they want to win.  UCLA pulled out a lucky win as well and on a sidenote the Yankees kicked some ass so my teams had a good day today.  Now if the Broncos can manage not to screw up tomorrow and smash the Bills I'll have a really good weekend  (it'll help to win my fantasy football league game as well).

Boise St. losing was a nice surprise today.

Hey, do you guys get to watch your games for free where you are?  We don't get to watch any UH games unless we pay to watch on Pay Per View--is that common or are we just getting screwed?

ND has a tough one tonight.  Happy Valley is one tough place to play, especially after dark.  :rolleye:

Just wait for October 6...ND at UCLA

Ah...the smell of football is finally in the air.  UCLA has a win and Colt Brennan is on another touchdown tear...nice start to the season.

I tend to agree on WT blades, but you have to admit that they're never "boring."  I do have a real thing for this one, though:  Karambit Song.  Then again, it's a WT/Terry Guinn collab and Terry makes really nice stuff so maybe that's why.

Man, this thread just went to hell, didn't it?   :icon_scratch:

That's a beaut, Reg--Burchtree makes a helluva nice knife.

Don't have a Dao-song but I do have a nice Komodo that he did (don't remember if I posted these here before):

A-hah!  Found'em!  Click on first three links at top left:

The rest are from some other guys, but we wanna see our very own ZenGhost first, right?!

Haven't been flipping much these days so I'm out of practice, but if anyone's interested then you can check out the Instructionals too.  I really have to do an overhaul on the site.

Yeah, and maybe Z could set us up for a nice discounted group buy on a sweet Benchmade!  Have you seen his collection????

Ha--I wish I had that much pull with them.  Plus Benchmade seems to be slowing down in the bali world at the moment.  Plus all the trouble with Spyderco and their balis might be making companies a little gun-shy with balisongs.  Such a pain in the ass.

Welcome TOTJ and you too, jennyyu.

TOTJ--how about Streamlight?  I love Streamlight flashlights and I believe they also make a lot of lights for law enforcement and fire/rescue personnel, etc.  Also Pelican lights might be interested as well.  SInce it's for disasters and emergencies, the water resistance/proofness of the Streamlights and Pelicans may be preferable to Surefires anyway.  Not that I mind taking my Surefires out into the rain, but I have no problems submersing my Pelicans or Streamlights (at least the ones labeled for it).  Might be more of an issue in hurricane, flood and tsunami type situations.

Ah, another beautiful piece...I never get tired of seeing these, Dennis--don't ever stop .

But, you do have to get "The Art of Custom  Knifemaking".
If there're any left.
There's nothing like it.
I agree--terrific book and I always love the behind the scenes pics just as much as the finished product pics.

For anyone interested, the Amazon pages are back up and the 40D is once again available for pre-order (but read the availability notice).  They've also popped up on some other sites.  You may also want to check out the new Nikon bodies.
